Fuerteventura - the name probably comes from "fuerte" = strong, and "viento" = wind. It is these often extremely strong off-shore winds that particularly attract wind-surfers. Every year in August, the world speed-surfing championship is held in Fuerteventura and there is plenty for beach lovers, too, with more than 50 kilometres of sandy beach. The two largest holiday centres on Fuerteventura are the Jandia peninsula in the south, and Corralejo in the north. Carnival in February/March is the wildest time, and brings several weeks of parades, fancy dress and general good times across the islands. It is also fun to visit the island when surfing championships are being held. Fuerteventura's beaches and beautiful ocean is famous for great surfing spots.

You can now play golf at Fuerteventura and the wonderful climate ensures that you can play and improve your golf virtually every day of the year. Fuerteventura Golf Club is an 18 holes, par 70 golf paradise, with lush fairways, swaying palm trees and challenging water hazards extending 6124 square metres, with a mild descent from the Clubhouse Hotel towards the sea.

Caleta de Fuste Caleta de Fuste, also known as El Castillo, is a modern, purpose-built resort with shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. The gently shelving beach and calm, shallow waters of the bay make this a popular choice with families. Water sports enthusiasts are also well catered for and facilities include windsurfing, scuba-diving and sailing. The main shopping area is traffic-free and here you will find boutiques and gift shops as well as bars and restaurants. There is a wide variety of places to eat and most tastes are catered for. The resort is well maintained with nicely planted public areas which are kept litter-free. The newly constructed, 18-hole golf course is the first on the island and they offer accommodation close by. The situation of Caleta de Fuste, 5 miles south of the airport, makes the resort susceptible to some aircraft noise during the day (there is no night-time flying).

Corralejo Corralejo, once a fishing village, has seen a tremendous amount of development in the last few years and is now the island's main resort with a large selection of shops, bars and restaurants. In spite of its growth, it has managed to retain a village atmosphere with a main street colourful with flowers, an attractive town square and a largely traffic-free area, bordering the sea, where you can have a drink or a meal and admire the views across the bay. Night life is generally low-key with four discos, a selection of bars as well as free entertainment in the main square on most evenings (including flamenco, Canarian dancing and live music). Activities (other than sunbathing and swimming!) include windsurfing, scuba diving and big game fishing. Jet-skiing is popular and mountain bikes are also available for hire. Corralejo has two sandy beaches, the Galera beach and a smaller one near the town pier. A little more than a mile-and-a-half to the south are the "Grandes Playas", nearly seven miles of uninterrupted, fine, white sand and spectacular sand dunes beaches.

El Cotillo El Cotillo is small and rustic with comparatively few tourist amenities although there are reputedly, thirteen restaurants. The chief attraction is the wonderful beaches. There are a series of sandy bays to the north of the village and the further towards the lighthouse you go, the quieter they are - like being on a desert island. To the south, you will find further long stretches of sand backed by cliffs. All accommodation in El Cotillo is within easy walking distance of the beaches. El Cotillo will appeal to those who simply want to "crash-out". May be too quiet for some and, although not essential, car hire is recommended.

Jandia The modern, upmarket resort of Jandia, lies on the southeast tip of the island sandwiched between barren hills and a fabulous coastline. This resort attracts guests from all over Europe and is a popular spot for naturists. The spectacular beach seems to stretch on forever but you should take time out from lazing under the cloudless skies to visit the typically Canarian fishing village of Morro Jable which adjoins Jandia. The soft sands follow the coast for an incredible 32km. The coastal breezes make them a brilliant choice for experienced windsurfers. Evenings in Jandia more or less amounts to good food, good wine and good company, savoured in tapas bars and international restaurants.
